As the weather warms and summer approaches, many are eager to escape the urban sprawl and immerse themselves in the great outdoors. Fortunately, you don’t have to travel far from London to encounter stunning landscapes and awe-inspiring views.
One avid walker has recommended a countryside stroll that’s just an hour away from the capital. Upon arriving at the station, you’ll be greeted by spectacular views en route to a historic market town, brimming with independent, antique and quirky shops – an ideal spot for a leisurely browse and a few hours of relaxation.
Londoner and hiking enthusiast Zoe Tehrani, known for sharing her favourite UK walks on TikTok, recently highlighted a route that begins with a train journey from London Bridge to Hassocks, a charming village in West Sussex, reachable within an hour.
After a mile-long walk, you’ll find yourself in the heart of the South Downs National Park. As Zoe explains: “You can follow the South Downs Way with all the amazing views. After a few miles you’ll reach Ditchling Beacon, an Iron Age hill fort, and if you keep going for a few more miles you’ll reach Lewes, a historic market town where you can get the train back to London.”
A few miles further, you’ll encounter Ditchling Beacon, an Iron Age hill fort. Continue for a few more miles and you’ll arrive in Lewes, a historic market town where you can catch a train back to London.
Zoe estimates this walk to be approximately 10 miles from station to station. In a previous blog post about the hike, she cautioned walkers about a “steep hill to the ridge early on out of Hassocks”.
As you amble along, you’ll encounter the quaint Jack and Jill windmills before ascending the ridge to reach the summit of the hike at Ditchling Beacon.
Beyond this point, the terrain “pretty much levels” out incorporating some “gentle hills” subsequently leading into a “downhill for the rest of the walk to Lewes”.
In response to whether the ramble is suitable for novices, Zoe remarked: “Hmm, it would be a bit challenging. Due to the length of [the walk].”
Others have shared their impressions, with one adding: “Blimey, Ditchling Beacon to Lewes. That’s quite a walk.”
A fellow walker who attempted the route was charmed by the experience, declaring: “I did this and I loved it. Done 41K steps that day.”
Another commented: “Thanks for giving me another excuse to just get out of London.”
Commuters will find direct train services from both London Victoria and London Bridge to Hassocks, and likewise from Lewes to London Victoria.
Moreover, she has conveniently crafted a Google Map detailing the entire trail, ensuring an effortless navigation for adventurers.
