Europe is home to some of the world’s most stunning cities, each with its own unique architecture, culture and must-see highlights.
Now, avid traveller @itsrapha83 on social media platform X, who has visited around 30 countries on the continent has revealed their top picks for medium sized cities, ranging from the north of Europe in Belgium to the south in Italy and Portugal.
The 10 cities all have a population between 100,000 and 250,000 inhabitants, making them a perfect day-trip destination during your next jolly around Europe.
Here Express.co.uk runs through Raphael’s top picks.
Beginning in the north of Europe, Raphael brings attention to the Dutch city of Maastricht, found in the Limburg region. A student city, Maastricht “has a youthful vibe”, as well as some beautiful churches, they revealed.
Known as the birthplace of the Euro, it sets itself apart from other cities through its tranquil City Park, perfect for a relaxing walk or picnic.
Another interesting feature is its “bear pit”, located near the Prins Bisschopssingel entrance, which used to be home to real brown bears but now houses a poignant art installation.

Belgium was awarded two spots on Raphael’s list, the first being the medieval city Bruges, often described as a mini-Amsterdam.
“This medieval city is known for its incredibly well preserved streets, churches and monuments, as well as its canals,” they wrote.
“Bruges is usually quite packed with tourists but in the lower season, it’s an amazing place to go for a walk in.”
Just two hours from the UK, Bruges was ranked as Europe’s most walkable city, navigable in just 29 minutes. One of the city’s most iconic landmarks is the Belfry of Bruges, a medieval bell tower located in the city centre. This 83-metre-high tower, housing 47 bells, is one of the oldest examples of medieval urban and public architecture, earning it a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The second Belgian city on the list is the lesser-known destination of Leuven. Also a student city, it is famous for its academic heritage and its town hall, which Raphael deems to be the most beautiful in the world.
“This is a very safe and clean city and it has a youthful atmosphere thanks to its large student population,” Raphael wrote.
“When visiting Leuven, be sure to check out its Beguinages (the small and big ones) and have a beer in the Oude Markt.”

The second-largest city of Portugal, Porto, is perfect for British tourists looking for a cheap getaway, with flights often on sale for as little as £13 and was described by Raphael as “one of the most amazing cities I’ve visited”.
“The Portuguese Baroque and the azulejos are glorious and the sunset from the Jardim do Morro was one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.”
Porto is located right on the coast and has a number of sandy beaches to choose from, as well as a bustling city centre full of restaurants and shops.
