Edelweiss Asset Management Company (AMC) has received in-person approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to enter the new asset class of Specialized Investment Funds (SIFs).

The AMC has launched a new platform called Altiva SIF by Edelweiss AMC to offer its products. The company is awaiting SEBI’s final approval for its first SIF product, which will likely be from the hybrid category.

Radhika Gupta, MD & CEO of Edelweiss AMC explained the meaning of altiva, “inspired by altitude, embodies the resolve to rise above, the vision to see beyond, and the discipline to move with intent. Inspired by the spirit of Edelweiss—the rare alpine flower known for thriving where few can— altiva represents the pinnacle of investment.”

The fund house is the first to enter the new segment, while other major asset managers have announced plans to do so soon.

Gupta expects a trend of proliferation of MF licenses, with many names queuing up for MF licenses to get into the SIF space. She expects at least 60-70 schemes by various fund houses.

The markets regulator recently introduced the SIF category to fill the gap between mutual funds and portfolio management services (PMS), with a minimum investment requirement of ₹10 lakh. The new asset class will offer more complex products than systematic investment plans (SIPs), with the liberty to use derivatives products to take positions and not just hedge investments.
