Volvo’s Chinese sibling locks in another EV for Australia

The Zeekr X, an electric SUV on the same platform as the new Volvo EX30, has been confirmed for an Australian launch as the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brand continues to set up shop locally.

Geely-owned Zeekr previously announced it would make its Australian debut with the 009 people mover in the second half of 2024, though it had teased plans to bring the X to the local market on multiple occasions.

However, a recent post on Zeekr Australia’s LinkedIn page announced the X crossover is “ready to hit the roads this summer”, suggesting a late 2024 or early 2025 launch.

The first right-hand drive examples of the Zeekr X recently rolled off the production line.

The Zeekr X is based on the same Sustainable Experience Architecture as a raft of models under the Geely umbrella, including the Volvo EX30 and Smart’s #01 and #03 crossovers – all three of which are either currently on sale in Australia or due to launch before the end of the year.

It’s almost identical in size to the BYD Atto 3, measuring 4432mm long and 2025mm wide (including the mirrors) on a 2750mm wheelbase.

European examples are offered with a choice of 200kW/343Nm single-motor rear-wheel drive or 315kW/543Nm dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations, with claimed WLTP range figures of 446km and 425km, respectively.

Power is supplied by a 69kWh lithium-ion battery, which can be charged at up to 150kW on a DC fast-charger.

Inside the cabin, there’s an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a 24.3-inch augmented reality head-up display.

In some markets, buyers can option ventilated front seats and a 13-speaker Yamaha audio system.

The Zeekr X is priced from €44,990 (A$73,680) in Germany, identical to the Tesla Model Y.

In Australia, the Model Y starts from $55,990 before on-road costs, while the Volvo EX30 opens at $59,990 before on-road costs. It’s unclear where the Zeekr will be priced.
