People are only just realising how to make sure their suitcase is first off the plane | Travel News | Travel

Travelling can often be a source of stress, with concerns about navigating security, the safe arrival of your luggage, and the behaviour of fellow passengers.

However, holidaymakers are being advised to follow some straightforward steps to ensure their suitcase is the first off the carousel upon landing – allowing them to start their holiday as soon as possible.

While many people naturally aim to arrive at the airport early, one suggestion is to check-in for your flight as late as possible.

The theory is that if you check in last, your bags will be loaded onto the plane last and should therefore be the first off when you reach your destination, according to Escape.com.

Thomas Lo Sciuto, a ramp worker and gate agent at a regional US airport, explained on Quora: “Bags will always be loaded front to back on the bag carts so if you check in last your bags will be in the last bag cart.”

However, this approach may cause anxiety for those who prefer to be organised well in advance, hence it’s been labelled a “high-risk strategy”.

Certain carriers offer passengers the option to pay a premium to have their bags prioritised, particularly if you’re flying business or are part of a frequent flyer programme, this even means a dedicated baggage carousel.

A clever tip from news.com. au suggests requesting a “fragile” label for your suitcase; it could cut down your wait at the baggage reclaim as these stickers influence how luggage is loaded onto the aircraft.

Luggage marked as fragile is typically loaded last, meaning it’s offloaded first, reducing your time spent at that dreaded carousel.

It’s also wise to strip any old tags from your bags and choose distinctive luggage to easily spot them on arrival.

If your luggage is distinctive, it’s also much less likely that another passenger will mistake it for their own bag.
