Mercedes-AMG’s new electric four-door coupe spied

Mercedes-Benz’s next-generation CLA four-door coupe is set to offer electric power, and a hotter Mercedes-AMG version has been spied testing.

It’s expected in 2025.

The electric Mercedes-Benz CLA was spied testing mid-2023 but this is the first time we are seeing the AMG variant in the metal.

It’s unclear whether it will continue to be called CLA, or if it’ll adopt the EQA nameplate.

The headlights are hard to distinguish, however it appears the AMG CLA will retain the thin light strips on the top and at the bottom from the 2023 Concept CLA Class.

AMG models typically have a raft of cosmetic differences to distinguish them from less sporty Mercedes-Benz-badged models, and on this prototype we can see different air intakes up front plus a lower air intake with a diamond pattern.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA prototype previously spied had flush door handles that popped out when the vehicle was unlocked, which we expect will also feature on AMG variants.

As with the concept, there are rounded tail lights that appear to be connected with a light bar.

This AMG prototype also features a large rear spoiler.

Reports suggest AMG variants will offer dual-motor all-wheel drive, with a potential system output of between 294kW and 367kW of power.

The new MMA platform underpinning the CLA replacement will support both internal combustion and electric powertrains and will replace the current MFA2 platform underpinning the existing CLA as well as models like the A-Class.

The new architecture will be the first to use the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS).

Mercedes-Benz has announced from 2025 onwards all of its newly launched vehicle architectures will be electric-only, meaning the MMA platform will likely be the last Mercedes-Benz platform introduced with the option of ICE power.
